  1. What is the purpose or function of the music?
        - Is it for dancing, to provide a show, background music, or to create a special atmosphere, such as for a wedding ceremony?

  2. Select music that is appropriate for the occasion and the audience.
        - Match the era or style of music with the age group or tastes of those who will be in attendance, or music that matches a particular theme for your event.

  3. For Weddings...
        - Consider classical or light pop music for the wedding ceremony, some background music for dinner, and a band for dancing.

  4. Call well in advance.
        - Musicians will often book engagements as much as six to twelve months in advance.

  5. Get it in writing.
        - Insist on a contract. The professional musicians of the G.R. Federation of Musicians always use a union contract, which assures you that they will show up on time, on the correct date, and that they will give you more than your money's worth of entertainment. Don't rely on everyone involved remembering the details of a phone conversation. Your event is too important!!

  6. Ask for references.
        - You may be able to catch a live performance, or at least get a tape and/or song list from the group. Many groups or single entertainers have a promotional package available.

  7. Ask for suggestions.
        - Many details, such as song selection, emcee duties, etc. can be handled by the musician or band. Let them know what you need. Professionals have been to a lot of functions and have picked up a lot of great ideas along the way.
